When was the last time your school library underwent a strategic update—or a purposeful weeding of outdated titles? In 2021, the Bring on the Books initiative set out to answer that very question across the Yavapai Library Network, which includes 28 school libraries with collections averaging a 1986 publication date. Through meticulous collection analysis, intentional deselection, and targeted reinvestment, those aging shelves now tell a different story. The average publication date has climbed to the year 2000—a measurable leap toward relevancy. More importantly, the program has delivered nearly $126,000 worth of new books directly into school library collections. Join us to discover how a grassroots idea evolved into a sustainable movement. Learn about the process, the partnerships, and the powerful outcomes—and gain inspiration for how your own school, district, or region can follow suit to build vibrant, modern collections that support today’s learners.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify creative, cost-effective strategies for acquiring new library materials, even with little to no budget.
  • Apply data-informed approaches to collection development and weeding to enhance relevance, inclusivity, and instructional alignment within limited financial means.
  • Explore practical techniques for engaging community stakeholders and forming sustainable funding partnerships that support ongoing library improvement.

Presenters:

Suzie Roth is a seasoned librarian with over 24 years of experience in both K–12 and higher education settings. She began her career as a dedicated school librarian before transitioning into a Research and Instruction Librarian role at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where she spent 15 years supporting academic success at the collegiate level. Suzie’s passion for student literacy and equitable access to resources brought her back to her roots in school libraries. Today, she serves as the County School Librarian for Yavapai County, providing support to 32 school libraries and mentoring staff in all aspects of library service and development. Beyond her professional role, Suzie has been a committed advocate for education and community engagement. She recently completed 12 years of service on the local School Board and currently lends her expertise as a board member for both the Jewish Community Foundation of Prescott and the Imagination Library of the Prescott Area. When she’s not championing literacy, you’ll likely find her tending to her garden, cultivating both plants and peace.
