Program Description:

How do you present true crime programming for teens without focusing on gore, or accidentally glorifying the crime or the criminals? It's actually easier than it sounds when you fin the right type of cases and present it with the right spin. This presentation will discuss how the Yuma County Library District created a true crime program for teens, and how they were able to get buy-in from schools and parents in order to make it a major success without sensationalizing the crime, or glorifying the perpetrators.

Elia Juarez likes to joke she is the state's only Emmy-Award winning librarian. She is not sure this is completely true, but she does have an Emmy Award from her former life as a TV news writer, assignment editor and News Director. In her current incarnation, Elia holds an MLS from the University of Arizona and is the Teen and Youth Services librarian for the Yuma County Library District, where she has worked in various capacities for the past 12 years. When she is not eyeballs deep in the various detritus that comes with working in youth and teen services programming, Elia likes to hang out with her two dogs and two cats and travel as much as possible with her fiancé. She is also a cosplayer, graphic novel devourer, true crime enthusiast and foodie.
