Program Description:  

Webinar participants will learn how to prepare for large-scale shifting projects. First, we will discuss the value and philosophy of weeding collections and how to conceptualize the best use of limited space.  Next, we will talk about ways to organize staff and volunteers to take on different tasks at all stages of the project, and how this can apply to other tasks beyond shifting. Finally, we will discuss how to prepare and mark shelving before the day of “The Big Shift” in order to move items as efficiently as possible in a short amount of time. 

Presenter Bio: 

Mary Corcoran is the Programming Librarian at the Flagstaff City-Coconino County Public Library. Prior to getting her MLIS, she interned at the Desert Laboratory Library on Tumamoc Hill in Tucson, Arizona and worked as a library assistant in the Flagstaff High School Library and Media Center. She went on to become the director of the Williams Public Library before returning to her hometown of Flagstaff, Arizona. In all her roles, she has undertaken large-scale shifting projects, the most recent of which involved weeding and moving the downtown Flagstaff library's nonfiction, biography, fiction, and science fiction sections over a matter of months.
